Interweaving scenes from her process that mimic unpaid domestic labor often associated with women and a female shaman performing overlapping customs from the east and south, the Making of an Amulet allegorizes chores and rituals while exploring gender identity and the spiritual embodiment of it. When presented in blue costumes in elaborate settings interspersed with folkloric actions like searching with a forked branch or blue water reading, the mundane tasks of washing, cutting, sewing become significant acts themselves, instead of unappreciated menial chores. Its triangular form evokes notions of home, headwear, or attire. Employing acrylic paint and thread, I playfully interlace patterns across the familial imagery, infusing cultural nods such as party hats, fezzes, inverted solo cups resembling fezzes, carnations (ottoman symbol of love) and liberty bells (american symbol of freedom). The portraiture is a mix of found photos of immigrants, my Turkish family and my Hoosier husband’s family, all intertwined into patterns with flora. Through humor, I aim to foster connection and transcend borders, forging a new home as an immigrant woman by weaving together past, present, and future. Influenced by Turkish Oya (meaningful lace edgings on headscarves that women use to express their feelings or private news), the exaggerated, colorful crochet edge is a nod to non-verbal communication. Reflecting on this practice, common among various world cultures with enduring traditions, I've embarked on crafting my own mixed media amulets, drawing inspiration from individual body parts and dynamic images of my body in motion. Utilizing natural materials reminiscent of those employed by traditional amulet artisans—such as ceramics, beads, and fabric—I fashion these talismans designed to safeguard a space. These creations prompt contemplation: What safeguards us, and why do we seek protection? Can objects hold power when there is faith? They are then layered with colorful acrylic paint, pattern, embroidery, screenprinting, and applique to display a cacophony of shapes, humans, and botanicals. Resembling a collaged face of a man with big teeth and a cowboy hat, the irregular shape defies the rigidity of a western painting rectangle. In a play on words, the title means “are you a cowboy”, but encountered in this context, it could also signify a cowboy named “musun”. Having fun with being bilingual and how it affects my comprehension of the world, my titles often seek to challenge the perception of the viewer. I was captivated by the intimate bond between these two women and the ambiguity of their relationship. The delicate pink handkerchief, serving as the backdrop for this image, was a gift from a fellow workshop participant seeking to offload accumulated domestic textiles. Within the supportive workshop environment, female-identifying students of varying ages found comfort in exchange and dialogue, inspiring a series of artworks celebrating feminine bonds. Combining kilim rug symbols with meanings like love on an egg-shaped hand-pinched ceramic vessel in pastel tones, this artwork merges hard earth and soft doily, a playful nod to amulets and Easter Eggs. It is no coincidence that the title O, also formally resembles the main egg shape. Interested in folklore, I combine relics and strange rituals from different traditions of Eastern and Western beliefs. Scattered in between crocheted oya that look like the alphabet or an intricate amoeba with poky textures, are photo transfers of a gender-ambiguous face and arms in gestures like slapping or poking. As I meditate on life’s organic propagation, I adorn the work with acrylic paint, sequins, beads, and embroidery, resembling seeds spreading without borders like the stubborn weeds in my garden. ID card-like rectangles feature immigrants in traditional attire photographed by Augustus Francis Sherman, a registry clerk at Ellis Island. My childhood photos in Turkish folk outfits are a recurring motif on the edges, signifying fashion in identity formation and assimilation. Midwest-inspired elements, like fly-fishing gear from trips with my Hoosier husband, add regional flair, sparking thoughts on local adaptation. The crochet extensions, resembling legs, weighed down with fishing floats, suggest a transient sense of protection as if it could depart at any moment while the interlinked yarn loop in the front unifies it into a sturdy entity. Within the pattern of photo-transfer figures, painted areas, and embroidered symbols, women gather in communal formations, their collective presence forming supportive structures. The solvent-transferred photographs are highlighted with transparent acrylic paint and machine-sewn yarn lines. Visual symbols and textured materials, like sequined corn or a 3D tongue embroidery, embellish this blob with complex biological and bicultural bonds. I weave these women together, symbolizing familial links, and the interplays of cooperation and conflict. Despite tensions, like those among my aunts, they form an intertwined entity akin to companion plants. The crescent-shaped, detached limb features photos of my arm in various gestures with an Ottoman carnation pattern signifying love. Gold Day Video installation 2021 6:08 min, 2018 https://www.hale-ekinci.com/gold-day A colorful story of a women’s social gathering during the time of Turkey’s political shift toward a more conservative government ruling. Told from the perspective of a distressed daughter, the film presents "The Gün", a common tradition, while touching on the contested headscarf issue. The Gün is a system of gift exchange and constructing female space and networks; when women gather in the host’s flat to have food, tea, and conversations, each bringing the hostess a gold coin (~$70). Participants take turns hosting, gathering a considerable sum of money later used on household needs. Inspired by my childhood in Turkey, the story starts with the mom stealing her daughter’s napkin collection for her Gün event and takes a surreal turn when the visitors use them for prayer. I made this in After Effects by collaging drawings, images, typography, and green-screened footage.
